Facts:  Elder is a Saxon word for "Fire".  Young branches were hollowed out to make whistles and pipes.   And hollowed branches were even used for bellow (fanning smith fires).  Elder berries are edible and got Settlers and Native Americans through tough winters.   Berries are made into syrups.  The berries are also used to sooth the throat during colds.  The flowers are used in make-up to disguise eye wrinkles.  An infusion of Elder Berry leaves can deter insects, if rubbed on the skin.
