Chumash Today

The Chumash People exist proudly to this day. We can still hear their "Welcome Song" sang at many local gatherings. Many artifacts and lessons have been passed down and preserved. The Chumash continue to cherish and honor this beautiful Earth. Anthropologist and archeologists try to preserve these amazing peoples' wisdom, knowledge and history. The remaining Chumash people still carry their deep love for our mother earth. In 1849, many Native Americans followed the gold rush. California has a diverse Native American population whose forefathers very likely walked these California lands "as one people" thousands of years ago. There were no boundaries or state lines between Native American peoples. Like the wolf, mountain lion and buffalo- Native American people enjoyed a free land. Plains Native Americans shared their desert knowledge with the coastal Chumash, who shared their life style with forest people. We sincerely hope that these endearing people will continue their great efforts to survive and thrive...
