In the middle period, the Chumash became the dominant people of the Santa Barbara-Ventura County Area. Their fishing and sea mammal hunting was legendary. They used barbed harpoons and shell hooks. About half way through this era, the Tomol was created and perfected. The Tomol allowed the Chumash People to travel the coastline and fish in deeper waters. Travel to the islands was efficient and faster. The bow and arrow was created, replacing the Atlatl, during this time. Settlements grew large. Hunting ranges were claimed, as well as, fishing and planting areas. The Chumash had true communities and families were strong and loved. It was at this point that the Chumash developed a currency used in trading. This currency, Anchum, was used by many of the other neighboring tribes, as well. The word "Anchum" and the word "Chumash" are related. "Chumash" basically means- 'Bead Money Makers'. Then, the droughts came. The bow and arrow became a significant weapon for hunting and defense. Unfortunately, with drought comes scarcity. And, there was competition for hunting, farms, and fishing between tribes. |
