The Initial Early Period is referred to as the Oak Grove Era.  This reference is directed at the change in environment that occurred during this period.  Pine forest began to recede up mountains as the ocean levels rose.  The pine forest flourished in upper regions, but Oak Trees were beginning to encroach lower, more arid, regions.

This change in nature did have a profound effect upon the Native Americans occupying these lands in future times.  These people were still migratory.  Milling stones have been discovered for this period.  Large boulders along rivers could be found pitted and ground out for grinding small seeds from grasses and sage for food.  They continued to live by the ocean.  Shellfish were a primary source of food.  Interestingly, there is not much evidence to any major hunting or fishing, yet.  Gathering was the primary method of getting food.
