Sebastian Vizcaino

Sebastian Vizcaino, 1602 On May 5th, 1602, Sebastian Vizcaino sailed three ships into Chumash coastline- the San Diego, the Santa Tomas, and the Tres Reyes. Again, he was to map and explore California's coast. With him were three Carmelite Fathers: Fr. Andres de la Asumpcion, Fr. Antonio de la Ascencion, and Fr. Tomas de Aquino. Again, the Chumash leaders sped in Tomols and greeted the travelers. The "Wot" (chieftain) generously offered to entertain the crews and officers, provided them with anything they needed, and offered what he possessed- as written in Father Ascencion's journals. The Chumash were also described as very healthy. They had no diseases. Disease was delivered to the Chumash only after the Mission period. They were spiritual, kind, generous, and strong. They bathed daily, spent a great deal of time in the ocean, and enjoyed sweats (Apa'yik). Most Native Americans did bathe daily, unlike some Europeans who bathed very rarely- (hence the creation of perfume). In April, 1603, Vizcaino returned home after reaching Acapulco on March 22, 1603. The Spanish were not to return for another 166 years. |
