The Cherokee people were once one tribe that covered parts of 8 southern states, including; Alabama, North and South Carolina, Georgia, Kentucky, Tennessee, Virginia, and West Virginia.
During the 1800s a series of events caused the Cherokee people to be broken into several tribes, scattered across different parts of the United States. Today, there are 3 federally recognized tribes and several state recognized tribes throughout multiple states. Each tribe has its own tribal government and are independent of each other. The Echota Cherokee Tribe is a state recognized tribe located in Alabama with members scattered throughout the United States. |
