The Echota Cherokee Deer Clan West traces its original ancestry to the Cherokee forty-niners that migrated to California during the Gold Rush of 1849. The descendents of many of the Cherokee forty-niners were members of the Echota Cherokee Tribe of Alabama. Echota Deer Clan West was made an official clan in 1994 when Dr. Robert "Nighthawk" Vann was appointed clan chief. Today, Deer Clan West has over 200 members across 13 states. Monthly meetings are held discussing the educational program, current business, Cherokee language lessons, as well as crafts and storytelling. |
